Russia then blocked Meta’s Facebook (which had some 70 million users in the country) and Instagram (80 million). Since the conflict began, Russian authorities have branded Telegram’s main rival, Meta, an “extremist” organization, in part for permitting certain users in Ukraine to post calls for violence against the Russian military. In the latter, it has become the preferred app for disseminating government advice for avoiding air strikes-as well as for Russian disinformation.īut it is in Russia itself that Telegram has become nearly indispensable over the past year, thanks to the Putin regime’s wartime clampdown against Western tech. Telegram has also been crucial for pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong and in countries under Russia’s thumb, like Belarus and Ukraine. In Brazil, where the app has been downloaded on more than half of the country’s smartphones, much of the January 2023 insurrection was planned on the platform. But in many parts of the world, Telegram is mainstream. In the US, Telegram has been relatively slow to catch on, though in the wake of Donald Trump’s ban from Facebook and Twitter in January 2021, it has increasingly become a hotbed for far-right groups like the Proud Boys and followers of QAnon. Telegram has the capacity to share nearly any confidential information a government requests. In January 2021, a PR crisis surrounding WhatsApp’s data-sharing with Facebook helped drive millions of people to Telegram, an exodus Durov called possibly the “largest digital migration in human history.” Still, Durov has repeatedly managed to benefit from the stumbles of other tech giants, particularly when user privacy is at stake. Often described in the press as an “encrypted” or “secure” messaging app, Telegram has fashioned itself as a refuge for safe, anonymous communication, but in fact it requires users to go out of their way to set a chat as “secret” unlike on WhatsApp or Signal, end-to-end encryption is not the default. The platform, now based in Dubai, has minimal content moderation aside from a stated commitment to taking down illegal pornography, IP rights violations, scams, and calls for violence. “It is the idea that everyone on this planet has a right to be free.” “For us, Telegram is an idea,” Durov has said. In the decade since its founding in Russia, Telegram has grown to become one of the biggest social networks in the world, with 700 million users-yet only about 60 core employees. In many cases, it’s impossible to tell what’s really happening to people’s accounts-whether spyware or Kremlin informants have been used to break in, through no particular fault of the company whether Telegram really is cooperating with Moscow or whether it’s such an inherently unsafe platform that the latter is merely what appears to be going on. These cases have set off a swirl of conspiracy theories, paranoia, and speculation among dissidents, whose trust in Telegram has plummeted. Perhaps most disturbingly, some activists have found their “secret chats”-Telegram’s purportedly ironclad, end-to-end encrypted feature-behaving strangely, in ways that suggest an unwelcome third party might be eavesdropping. Hundreds have had their Telegram activity wielded against them in criminal cases. Over the past year, numerous dissidents across Russia have found their Telegram accounts seemingly monitored or compromised. Matsapulina’s case is hardly an isolated one, though it is especially unsettling. Telegram would later posit a third possible explanation: That in the few hours after Matsapulina’s arrest and before she was questioned, FSB officers had extracted her messages using a phone-hacking tool like Cellebrite. The other “unpleasant” explanation, she wrote, “is, I think, obvious to everyone.” Russians needed to consider the possibility that Telegram, the supposedly antiauthoritarian app cofounded by the mercurial Saint Petersburg native Pavel Durov, was now complying with the Kremlin’s legal requests. Based on what she’d gathered, the expensive software was reserved for high-level targets and was not likely to have been turned on a mid-level figure in an unregistered party with about 1,000 members nationwide. One was that they had installed some kind of malware, like the NSO Group’s infamous Pegasus tool, on her phone. She ruled out the chance that anyone in her close-knit group had been cooperating with security forces (they’d all also left Russia by then), which left two conceivable explanations for how the officers had read her private Telegram messages. In April, after having made it safely to Armenia, Matsapulina recounted the episode in a Twitter thread. We contributed to this in our own way by helping to pioneer the whiteboard animation format while creating the RSA Animates series, a series of animated 10-minute lectures which today have had over 100,000,000 views. Who among us can say they haven’t searched ‘how to…’ in the hope that there is a video ready to reveal all. YouTube is the second most popular search engine in the world. The rise of explainer videos is another sign of this popularity and relevance, and the way we connect with information in these videos is a great example of the importance of visual storytelling. Whether you’re interested in discovering ways to work or eagerly waiting for the next instalment in a YouTuber’s travel diary, technology is only making visual storytelling more popular and more accessible. Fast-forwarding slightly, YouTube and Instagram show how the popularity of visuals shows no sign of changing. Icons that capture meaning and crystalise information in small instantly recognisable illustrationsĬultural and popular references that make a message or idea easier to remember and understandĭan’s experience shows the impact these early stories have on us and how visual storytelling stays with us. Set pieces that connect a whole range of points together Visual metaphors that translate a complicated idea into a more understandable form In our whiteboard animations, we use several visual devices to harness the full power of visual storytelling:Ĭharming and engaging characters tailored to audiences and stories Going further, whiteboard animation can then layer and connect your storytelling and information to give viewers a full and connected picture that fits together and connects. The joy of whiteboard animation is that you can create anything you can think of, making it a playground for imaginative and tailored storytelling that can get right to the heart of ideas and messages. We are pioneers and experts in whiteboard animation, so we’ll focus on that. And our brains take all that meaning and information in flat-pack form, building it into the connected, memorable and complex ideas.ĭepending on your visual storytelling solution and medium, the way visual storytelling works will differ. That list alone shows how many opportunities storytelling provides to add engagement, meaning and information. Our brains are wired to understand and unpack stories taking meaning from their structure, narrative, characters, references and tone. In part, this is due to the talents of the artist or director and in part it’s due to effectiveness of storytelling itself. In a nutshell, this is the power of visual storytelling. Visual storytelling solutions are so common in our lives because they work connecting with us while making information easy to understand and take onboard. This list is far from exhaustive, because visuals and the storytelling they deliver play a role in our life at almost every level. It could be a post on Instagram, a political cartoon in a newspaper, a graphic novel, a well-shot YouTube video, some visual notes or an animation. And just like a flat-pack furniture, it comes in lots of shapes and sizes. Delivered through rich visuals, these are either recorded from the real world or created by artists and visual thinkers. Visual storytelling is the art of communicating messages, emotions, narratives and information in a way which reaches viewers at a deep and lasting level. The only reason you would download this over Dolphin is if you’re running on a very old Windows OS, and then it runs far better than Dolphin, because well… Dolphin doesn’t work on those super old Windows operating systems. It’s a free piece of software that you can download for PC (NT/2000/XP), but unfortunately the most recent update was many, many years ago in 2009 making it buggy and unreliable. It has a highly optimized, efficient emulation core that can achieve reasonable speed, with only minor frame rate drops now and then. Number 3 on our list is SuperGCube a Win32 Gamecube emulator based off the long forgotten and discontinued GCube emulator. But that doesn’t stop some people from trying, even if they’re not that good. Now we’ll be honest, due to Dolphins high quality and conglomerate over the Gamecube emulator niche there aren’t many rivals to it, because its simply that good. It will run your games, but expect freeze, frame rate drops and possible crashes from time to time. The only real reason you would download this one is if Dolphin, for some reason just doesn’t work on your devices. This gives Dolphin little to no competition, and with time, has pushed away other emulator creators because they just can’t outperform it. You’re probably wondering why its number 2 on the list, but in all honesty, there’s only a handful of Gamecube emulators out there. The user interface is also a big of a pain to get around and as you can imagine, feels a little outdated. It can run a majority of Gamecube ROM’s well but Whinecube is renowned for framerate drops. Whinecube is only available for Windows and has 3.5/5 star reviews on many other emulation websites, so even though its old, people still use it and download it regularly. It hasn’t been updated since 2008, so let that sink in and make you realise how good Dolphin is to make competitors like this abandon their work. At first this may be a bit overwhelming, but this is what makes Dolphin far superior to any of its competitors.Ĭoming in at number 2 on our best Gamecube emulators is one called Whinecube. Once you install and jump into Dolphin you will notice that you have a wide range of settings that you can change. You’re probably thinking “but Gamecube games are old”, that’s true but the files are actually fairly large and to output those fast 3D renderings require decent power, just like the best Dreamcast emulators. We recommend at least a quad core smartphone. But, you may need a powerful Android smartphone in order to play your Gamecube games at silky smooth frame rates. Like any of the best Gamecube emulators out there, you need a device that can power Gamecube ROMs, most PC and Macs will run Gamecube games just fine. You won’t need to pay for it either, as it’s 100% free. It’s available on Android, Windows and Mac, so you’ll be able to use this on most platforms. Dolphin Emulatorĭolphin Emulator is by far the most popular Gamecube emulator around, and that’s for a wide number of reasons. Please check the legality of ROM downloading in your area and always follow government guidelines on internet safety and copyright laws. So, we can not recommend and will not recommend downloading ROMs. It’s a shady area, but it’s a known fact that Nintendo or other games developers DO NOT want you to download ROM’s. If you’re looking to play your Gamecube games on modern technology, then you’ll need some of the best Gamecube emulators around in order to do so.įor those new to emulators, they’re basically pieces of software that you download in order to play ROM files, which are game files.ĭownloading Gamecube emulators is completely legal, but downloading ROMs is illegal. For instance, if checking for a detergent rash on a child, check under their diaper.
